A simple click of the mid-point of the gradient will make the tool go straight to the next or the last point of the gradient. The gradient picker in Photoshop CC 2018 has been enhanced to make it more easier to use the tool.
You can also go back and forth while drawing using the eraser tool. Photoshop CC 2018 has also brought in improvements to the pencil tool, you can now use the tool to draw directly in the image, like you were able to do in Photoshop CC 2017. Even though the Photoshop CC 2018 hasn't brought in much improvement, you can expect a few more tweaks and features to be added to the software in the future. The update though is only available to the New users of the software, with the basic users having to wait till the new update is available. The Photoshop CC 2018 has been the same software as the Photoshop CC 2017.
